App access, language support and place data can change. Do not arrive with one untested app and one English hotel name as your entire navigation plan.
The China reality now
For everyday mainland travel, start with a map that understands local POIs, entrances, metro exits and Chinese addresses. The practical setup is one mainland-focused map plus a tested fallback.
Best local-data default
AMap is built around mainland place, road and transit data. Its current English version supports driving, public transport, walking and cycling routes on Android and iOS. Keep Chinese place names ready because a venue's English name may still differ from the local listing.

Baidu Maps is another major source for mainland POIs and routes. The main app's English experience can vary, so test the exact version you can install. For Beijing, the separate Beijing Map provides an English interface and detailed local POIs.

Apple lists turn-by-turn navigation, traffic and public-transport features as available in mainland China, and says its China map product uses AMap services. It can therefore be practical on an iPhone, but coverage, labels and individual features can vary—test the Chinese destination and retain AMap as a fallback.
Apple feature availability ↗Compare the Chinese name, street address and entrance with the hotel, venue or ticket confirmation. Large stations, parks and shopping centres can place the correct POI far from the door you need.
Four layers
Amap (Gaode Maps) and Baidu Maps have strong local place and transport data. Apple Maps can be a familiar option for iPhone users in mainland China. AMap Global now has an English interface on Android and iOS, while language and feature support can still vary by product, device and region.
The same hotel, station or attraction may appear under several English spellings. Chinese text is the most useful common reference when a search or conversation fails.
Install a translation tool you understand, download Chinese language data where the app allows it and test camera, text and voice modes at home.
Maps are only one layer. Prepare payments, rail and ride-hailing while your usual phone number and email are easy to access.
Before departure
Complete logins and downloads while you still have familiar Wi-Fi, account recovery and bank support.
Avoid these mistakes
If a place is missing or the result looks wrong, paste its Chinese name or address from the official venue or your hotel.
Pins can be inaccurate or disappear. Save the written address, phone number and a nearby landmark too.
A new app may require email, SMS, payment verification or an app-store account. Complete those steps while your normal accounts work comfortably.
Language options can vary by operating system, region and app version. Test the exact version on your phone rather than relying on an old screenshot.
Battery loss, a broken screen or a locked account can stop navigation and payment together. Keep the hotel address and a payment fallback offline.
Large stations, parks and sights have multiple gates. Match the entrance named on your ticket and allow time to walk between gates.
