Payments in China
China is mobile-payment first in everyday life. Set up Alipay and Weixin Pay before you need them, then carry a physical card and a little RMB cash so one app failure cannot stop the trip.

The reality on the ground
01 / Mobile first
In restaurants, convenience stores, local shops, taxis and many travel apps, scanning a QR code or showing a payment code is usually the smoothest way to pay. A small merchant may not have a terminal for your overseas card.
02 / Cash is valid
RMB cash remains legal tender. Government policy requires businesses to keep cash as a backstop and tackles cash refusal. In practice, exact change can be less convenient at a mobile-first checkout, so carry small notes rather than relying only on cash.
03 / Best setup
Install both Alipay and WeChat/Weixin Pay, link an eligible card to each, keep one physical international card, and carry a modest amount of RMB cash. That covers app, network, issuer and merchant failures.
This is practical travel advice, not a claim that China is cashless. The State Council describes smartphone cashless payment as dominant across commercial venues, while the People's Bank of China requires cash to remain available as a lawful fallback.
Before departure
App registration and card binding are separate from whether a particular merchant transaction will be approved. Complete both the app and bank side of the setup.
Use Alipay or WeChat from the provider or your phone's official app store. Register with the overseas or Chinese mobile number accepted by the app and keep that number available for verification.
Follow the in-app bank-card flow. The 2025 government guide lists Visa, Mastercard, UnionPay, American Express, JCB, Diners Club and Discover, but availability, limits and charges remain subject to the product and issuing bank.
Enter the cardholder and identity information exactly as requested. The issuer may need to approve the binding or transaction; if it fails, check both the app's support channel and the card issuer.
If the app permits it, make a normal merchant purchase before relying on it for an airport transfer, hotel deposit or train. Never ask a stranger to run a test transaction for you.
Mobile payment
It is sensible to prepare both if your phone and cards allow it. A successful card binding does not promise that every feature or merchant will accept that funding source.

Inside WeChat
Weixin Pay is the payment service inside WeChat. Tencent says overseas users can register with an overseas mobile number and link an eligible international card for mainland merchant payments.
At the counter
The official 2025 government guide describes the two core QR flows: scan the merchant's collection code or show your own payment code. Online bookings add a third in-app confirmation flow.
Open Scan in Alipay or WeChat, scan the shop's collection QR code, enter the amount if asked, select the linked card and confirm. Before paying, check that the merchant name and amount are correct.
Open Pay, Payment Code or Money/Pay, choose the intended card and show the live barcode or QR code to the cashier. Keep the screen private until it is your turn and wait for the success message.
Ride-hailing, food delivery, tickets and mini-programs may open a wallet confirmation screen. Re-check the amount and funding card; an overseas card may work for merchant purchases even when transfers or another feature do not.
Fallback plan
A resilient setup is one mobile wallet, one independent physical card and some cash. Store them separately so a lost phone or blocked card does not remove every option.
One setup can fail because of an issuer block, verification problem, connection issue or merchant acceptance. Keep a second method independent of the first where practical.
Look for the matching card-network logo at the terminal. Acceptance has expanded at hotels, transport hubs, attractions and larger visitor-facing businesses, but many small everyday merchants are organised around QR payment rather than an overseas-card terminal.
RMB cash is legal tender and remains a valid fallback. Exchange at an authorised outlet or withdraw at an ATM showing your network's logo, preferably with some small notes; exact change may be less convenient at a QR-first shop.
Smaller notes are easier for taxis and small purchases. Save the card issuer's international support number separately in case a card is blocked or retained.
Troubleshooting
Check spelling, cardholder name, billing details and verification prompts. Confirm that the issuer allows overseas and online transactions, then contact the app or issuer rather than repeatedly retrying.
A particular card, merchant category or payment scenario may not be supported. Try the other prepared method; do not split or disguise a payment to bypass a limit.
Confirm that it is the merchant's legitimate collection code and that the app shows the correct merchant and amount. Avoid transfers to an unrelated personal account when you expect a normal merchant purchase.
Ask to pay in RMB cash and use small notes where possible. RMB cash remains legal tender and authorities require businesses to preserve cash acceptance, even though the everyday checkout habit is often mobile-first.
Use the physical card or cash fallback. Do not depend on venue Wi-Fi for the only available payment method, especially immediately after landing.
Direct answers
Yes, many visitors can register with an overseas mobile number and link an eligible international debit or credit card. Card network, issuer approval, identity verification, merchant type and current wallet rules still control each transaction, so prepare both wallets and an independent fallback.
Official visitor guidance states that eligible foreign-card mobile payments of CNY 200 or less carry no platform service fee and payments above CNY 200 carry a 3% service fee, with stated ceilings of US$5,000 per transaction and US$50,000 per year. Weixin currently has an additional first-time card-linking promotion. Exchange rates, issuer fees, app rules and the confirmation screen can change the final result.
Successful card binding does not guarantee every merchant or app flow. Check the merchant name and QR logo, cardholder details, available credit, issuer overseas/online permissions and any verification prompt. Contact the issuing bank, try another prepared card or wallet, or use RMB cash rather than repeatedly retrying.
Do not assume so. The official visitor setup is designed mainly for genuine merchant purchases. Person-to-person transfers, red packets and some Mini Programs or financial services can be unavailable with an overseas-linked card.
Ask the merchant to refund the original transaction and keep the wallet receipt and reference number. The refund normally follows the original payment route, but the wallet, merchant and issuing bank determine timing. A wallet success message can appear before the card statement is updated.
