What it’s actually like in China now

Local dining is highly digital, but staff ordering and RMB cash are still valid fallbacks. Save the restaurant’s Chinese branch name before setting out.

Dianping is the local discovery layer

Many residents use Dianping (大众点评) to compare branches, dish photos and recent reviews—the closest local equivalent to Yelp. Use it to shortlist, then confirm the exact branch and current hours in a mainland-ready map.

The menu may begin with a QR code

Table ordering often opens a WeChat or Alipay mini program, sometimes with sign-in or in-app payment. It is not universal: point to the menu and ask 可以人工点餐吗？ if your account, language or linked card does not work.

Dining hours can follow lunch and dinner service

Busy local restaurants may queue at meal times, while some smaller places pause between services or stop taking orders before the listed closing time. Recent branch information is more useful than a general city guide.

Mobile payment is the smooth default; keep a backup

Alipay and Weixin Pay are widely built into ordering and checkout. Overseas bank cards can be linked subject to the provider and issuer, while RMB cash remains an official payment option—carry a modest amount for fallback.

Find food like a local

Dianping 大众点评

China's local Yelp

Dianping is one of China's main local restaurant discovery and review platforms—the app many local diners use to compare ratings, recent photos, popular dishes and different branches. Think of it as the closest local equivalent to Yelp.

The current official iOS listing declares English support, and an English-language Google Play listing is available. Actual interface coverage, registration, reviews and download availability can vary by device, region, account and app version. Install and test it before departure; much of the local review content may still need translation.

From search to bill

Four steps that remove most friction

Find a real, workable restaurant

Start with Dianping (大众点评) for local reviews, photos and popular dishes, then open the exact branch in Amap or your chosen mainland-ready map.
Use recent menu and storefront photos as clues, not proof that every dish or price is still available.
Save the Chinese restaurant name and address before leaving Wi-Fi; branches of one chain can be far apart.

Understand the menu

Ask for a picture menu or use camera translation on one section at a time.
Treat a dish photo and translated title as incomplete: broth, lard, shellfish, nuts and sauces may not be visible.
For dietary or allergy needs, ask a direct ingredient question and wait for staff to confirm.

Order without being trapped by a QR code

A table QR may open a WeChat or Alipay mini-program and can require a login, phone number or supported payment method.
If it fails, say “可以人工点餐吗？”—Can I order with a member of staff?
Confirm quantity, spice level and whether the total is per item, portion or set before submitting.

Pay with a backup ready

Prepare Alipay or WeChat Pay before arrival and keep a physical card plus small-denomination RMB cash as backups.
Some QR menus accept only in-app payment; ask for the bill at the counter if your linked card is rejected.
Check the final bill for a service charge before considering any additional tip.

Show, do not improvise

Save these Chinese dining cards offline

For allergies, replace the blank with the exact Chinese allergen name and have the completed card reviewed by a fluent speaker and qualified clinician. If staff cannot confidently confirm, choose another dish or restaurant.

Food & water safety

Simple precautions, not food fear

Drink sealed bottled or properly boiled water

CDC’s current China guidance says tap water is not drinkable, including in major cities. Check the seal on bottled water.

Choose food cooked thoroughly and served hot

Be especially cautious with undercooked fish or shellfish and unpasteurised milk products, which CDC’s 2026 Yellow Book specifically flags.

Prefer traceable, well-run businesses

Use established restaurants or vendors with clear premises and normal turnover. China’s market regulator highlights licensed, reputable operators and scrutiny of tourism dining and online-only kitchens.

Wash hands before eating

Carry soap sheets or sanitiser for journeys and markets, but remember sanitiser does not remove every foodborne hazard.

Act early if seriously unwell

Use your travel-insurance medical line and seek professional care for severe dehydration, blood, persistent vomiting, high fever or worsening symptoms. Ambulance: 120.

Food delivery

Possible, but not the easiest first-night plan

Meituan, Ele.me and delivery mini-programs are designed around local addresses and live driver contact. Some international visitor platforms now expose delivery, but access and language support vary.

—A mainland phone number or app account may be needed for verification and driver contact.
—The address must usually be selected as a precise Chinese map pin, building and entrance—not only an English hotel name.
—Payment may have to complete inside a Chinese-language mini-program or delivery app.
—Drivers commonly call or message when they cannot find the entrance, and some hotels do not allow room-door delivery.
—Menu allergy notes are not a substitute for direct confirmation; kitchens can miss free-text requests.

For a short stay, ask whether hotel reception accepts deliveries and can help specify the Chinese entrance. Do not assume staff will order, pay or take responsibility for dietary instructions.

Common pitfalls

Where first-timers get caught

01Assuming “vegetable dish” means no meat broth, lard, fish sauce or small pieces of meat.
02Treating the 清真 sign or a translated label as sufficient for every personal religious requirement without asking.
03Using only an English restaurant name and arriving at the wrong branch.
04Scanning an unrelated or over-stickered QR code; ask staff which code is the restaurant’s ordering code.
05Believing a photo translator has correctly identified an allergen or medicinal ingredient.
06Relying on a foreign card alone at a small restaurant, or on one mobile wallet without cash backup.
07Adding a tip automatically: ordinary mainland restaurants generally do not expect one, while some venues already add a service charge.
